Cup ramyeon naengmyeon is the ultimate Korean summer hack. Take a packet of Yukgaejang sabalmyeon (cup noodle), cook the noodles, chill them down, and drop them into icy naengmyeon broth spiked with the original spicy seasoning powder. It is refreshing, fiery, and absurdly easy — the kind of recipe that makes you wonder why you never thought of it before.

Ingredients

  • 1 pack Yukgaejang Sabalmyeon noodles (cup ramyeon)
  • Hot water
  • Cold water
  • 1 packet naengmyeon broth (store-bought, chilled)
  • Yukgaejang seasoning powder (from the cup ramyeon pack)
  • Ice
  • Vinegar (optional)

Singapore Swap

  • Yukgaejang Sabalmyeon: Don Don Donki carries the widest selection of Korean cup noodles. FairPrice and Sheng Siong stock Shin Ramyeon cups and other Korean brands. The Tanjong Pagar Korean marts carry the exact Yukgaejang sabalmyeon.
  • Naengmyeon broth: Sold in packets at Korean marts on Tanjong Pagar Road. Brands like Pulmuone and CJ Bibigo offer ready-to-use chilled naengmyeon broth in the fridge or freezer section. Don Don Donki occasionally stocks these too.
  • Vinegar: Plain rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar from FairPrice works well for the optional sour kick.

Instructions

  1. Take out the Yukgaejang sabalmyeon noodles from the cup.
  2. Do not add the seasoning powder yet — set it aside for later.
  3. Pour hot water over the noodles and cook them, leaving them in slightly longer than the usual recommended time so they firm up well.
  4. Strain out all the hot water from the noodles.
  5. Rinse the cooked noodles under cold running water to chill them down and stop the cooking. This also gives them a bouncier texture.
  6. Pour the naengmyeon broth into a bowl.
  7. Add the Yukgaejang seasoning powder from the original cup ramyeon packet into the broth and stir.
  8. Adjust the spice level to your liking — you can use all the powder for full heat or hold some back.
  9. Add ice to the broth to make it extra cold.
  10. Add a splash of vinegar if you want a tangy edge.
  11. Add the chilled noodles into the icy broth and serve immediately.

Tips

  • Cook the noodles slightly longer than usual so they hold up in the cold broth without going mushy.
  • The combination of the spicy Yukgaejang powder with the cold naengmyeon broth creates a flavour that is surprisingly complex for a cup noodle hack.
  • Serve immediately after assembly — the ice will dilute the broth over time, so eat it fast.
